It's 2019. You’ve got resolutions and you’re looking for a new change in your life. You're looking for the big one… It’s time for a new job. But not just any job - you want this one to be different, you want this one to ‘fulfil’ you.
So, like most of us, you’re wondering “where do I start!?” With the help of this short guide, you’ll be on track to landing the job you’ve been waiting for in no time.

Why do you do, what you do?
They say start with the big tasks first - the biggest task of them all is to Start With Why. It’s not easy to figure out why you do something, and nobody can really tell you unless you figure it out yourself. Do you do it for the money? Could be dangerous, but mostlyfine. Do you just love the satisfaction of helping people?Also fine. Maybe you just love writing code and seeing your creations contribute to something bigger? More than fine.
Whatever it is, find out why. What makes you tick? What are you passionate about? This will not only help you discover what your purpose is in your next role but on those days you’re feeling down -which we all have - you can give yourself a small nudge to remind yourself:I’m doing this because of XYZ!
What’s your passion? What are you good at?
Next, it’s a good idea to figure out what you’re good at and what you enjoy. Maybe you’re already in a job and don’t particularly enjoy it. Identify the cause - is it the company, role or tasks? Is it just something you don’t connect with anymore?Self-awareness is key to career happiness. Figure out your strengths, your weaknesses and your ambitions and put this into an action plan!
Remember: You’re going to spend close to over 90,000 hours working in your lifetime, so it's essential to find something you can take some pleasure out of.
Fixing Up Your LinkedIn
This is probably a no-brainer to you, but in my time, I’ve come across some questionable LinkedIn profiles of people who are actually incredibly skilled at what they do!
If Facebook is for receiving memes from your grandparents, Instagram is to showcase your ‘perfect’ life, then LinkedIn is where you make it count so all employers know you’re the one they can’t let get away.
Connect with all your friends, former colleagues and associates; you never know who might know someone who knows someone who has the job you’ve been dreaming of!
Tip: Find someone in your industry/ role whom you admire and see how they’ve structured their profile. Remember to make yours personal to you; only show relevant info and sometimes ‘less is more’. This is your ticket to an interview.
Getting yourself out there
Now you’re on your way, it’s time to let yourself be known. If you can (some of you might be in jobs you don’t want to jeopardize, though I’m a strong believer in open communication between manager and employees, still…) make it known that you’re on the hunt for your next role to friends, family members and anyone in your community.
As they say, ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ in the age of referrals and tight communities, this couldn’t be truer. Although, you won’t get a job as a pilot without the license, sorry.
Finding the right company to match you
It’s time to go to the market! (the fun part)
Think of it like this, you’re a buyer looking to invest your skills, not to mention your time, into a worthwhile project. Why would you settle for anything less than inspiring? The traditional way of thinking is that companies are the ones in control, when in fact this is a two-way negotiation.
Take interviews, even when you’re not 100% sure about them. You’ll always learn something andbest case scenario you’re pleasantly surprised and end up connecting with them.
Be sure to understand the company’s vision, mission, values and team – this will give you an impression of what it’s like to work there. Great company reviews can be found on Glassdoor, like ours at OneCoWork. These really give you an insight into the day-to-day of a company.
Preparing for the interview
Preparing for an interview shouldn’t be anything new to you. Research the typical stuff; understand the brief company history; read the job description (again); make sure you know what they do - and why they do it - better than anyone else.

Now you’ve done all the hard work. You’re prepared and you have the interview. Now it’s about putting your preparation into practice.
