Hey there, Mike! Tell us about yourself?

Hi there, my name is Mike Petrovich and I am 30 years old. I was born in Michigan, (USA) and grew up across the USA. I’ve lived everywhere from NYC and Miami to a middle-of-nowhere town in Iowa.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy many things, some of them are:

Football: I’ve been playing since I was 3 years old.  Right now I am on CeleBreak, so I hope to see some of you, fans! Please forgive me for being American, but at least I didn’t call it soccer.

Entrepreneurship: I love the creative act of identifying a real-world need and building something new to solve it.

Contributing to open source software: The software industry wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for open source software. I love giving back with my own contributions.

… and professionally? What do you do?

I currently manage web and data engineers within an artist analytics team at Pandora Music (a US-only music service like Spotify). My role is to help my employees become effective team members and optimize the group spirit for them to deliver great teamwork!

Did you immediately find your dream job? What did your journey to finding your career look like?

I fell in love with computer programming after my first Chipmunk (yes, as in Alvin) creation. It’s a BASIC program that changed the color of a button when clicking on it. Real rocket science stuff! I was 13 years old and easily impressed.

However, at university, I considered studying physics but quickly changed my mind after encountering the fun (read: terrifying) mathematics of quantum mechanics.

Thus, I discovered my true passion for web development— at the intersection of product, design, and engineering— during my first web development job at Disney; working on the back then, new disneyworld.com platform.

Where is your favorite place to hang out in OneCoWork?

I have been working from Plaça Catalunya at the hotdesks and so my favorite place is the hot desks close to a coffee machine.

Give 3 tips to our readers!

  1. A journey is best measured in friends, not miles

  2. Work to live, don’t live to work

  3. Why do dogs always seem happy? Because they don’t perpetuate past emotions—they’re living the present moment. We tend to let past negative emotions continue, even when the thing that caused them is no longer there. Move on.

Tell us a joke!
They’re all dad jokes, you wouldn’t want me to.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

A positive pregnancy test, funny how it could also be the worst gift someone received, depending on the context. Ha.

Book recommendations

Here’s a couple:

Dancing Wu Li Masters: I read this in my teens and it blew my mind. It’s an overview of “New Physics” aka quantum mechanics and requires zero science or math background. It’s easy to read and absolutely fascinating.

Wait But Why: Not technically a book, but engrossing 15,000-word essays on topics from artificial intelligence to procrastination to a 4-part interview with Elon Musk, which is why it this is my favorite blog of all time.
