This weeks member spotlight is … Per Groeneveld!

Hi Per, Could you tell us a little about yourself?

I was raised in Utrecht, which is located in the center of the Netherlands. My favorite hobbies are photography and filmmaking. I used to travel around the world and enjoy the beautiful views with my professional camera. This hobby almost transformed itself into an extra job, but I decided to keep it as a hobby to bear the fun of it. Besides photography, sailing is a big part of my life too. I grew up sailing with small boats, and when lucky, I sailed with small sailing yachts. I wish to have my own sailing yacht, perhaps I will in the future.

… and professionally? What do you do?

I used to work on ships, but then a girlfriend came into my life and then a different lifestyle was calling. I noticed from previous experience working in gas shipping that there was room for improvement in this industry to get all ships working in an optimized way.

I came up with an idea for my startup, an app that can run on board the ships and optimize all cargo processes. The shipping industry is very old fashioned and slow in its changes. Together with a programmer, I started our software project called LoadGeni.

Besides this big project, I still earn my living by being a consultant for big shipping and gas companies. Soon we will start launching our product, so 2019 is the year that the real business needs to happen.

Did you immediately found your dream job, or how did your journey on finding your career looked like before?

I had no idea what I wanted to do in my life when finishing my degree in High school. The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to travel. In a strange way, I decided to go to the maritime University of Rotterdam because I knew sailors get to travel the world.

I finished my degree and became a sailor. You must think that I ended up on a small sailing boat, but you’d be wrong. I ended up on one of the biggest gas tankers you could possibly imagine. I first started as an apprentice and then climbed the ladder very fast and became Chief Officer (the rank just beneath the captain). In a period of 7 years, I was traveling all over the world seas. The job was fun and the best part of it was the holidays; I got 6 months of holidays a year, so traveling was for sure not a problem.

I enjoyed this crazy lifestyle a lot, but the job, in the end, became boring; therefore, I became a specialist in the gas shipping for the company I was working for. Now I am trying my own thing by starting this app.

Where is your favourite place to hang out in OneCoWork?

I’m still a bit new at OneCoWork so I try a lot of new places to hang out. You were able to find me on the second floor in Plaça Catalunya, but as I transferred to Marina Port Vell on the 1st of March, I will be looking out over the ships at a fixed desk. Anyway, you can always recognize me because I’m the 2-meter-tall Dutch guy. ;)

Give 3 tips to our readers!

  1. Discover the world before getting stuck in a crazy working life!!!

  2. Do not underestimate the power of the sea.

  3. Focus on your goals and create your own life with your imagination.

If you were a country, which one would you be?

I would be the world. I don’t really identify myself as being part of a country, traveling made me part of the world.

Movie recommendation:

One movie that I relate to as a specific part of my life is Captain Phillips. This story is about the vessel Maersk Alabama that got attacked by pirates. I found myself in this same situation during my first experience at sea, which makes this movie part of my sailing life.

How do we get in contact with you?

You can always contact me through my own website, or my companies website:

If not, through social media channel LinkedIn.
