July 18th is Nelson Mandela Day! Let’s take the day to show appreciation for such incredible, resilient, and historical work Mandela successfully achieved throughout his lifetime.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to fighting for equal rights among African Americans and against institutionalized discrimination, known as Apartheid. By his 20’s he led the youth wing of the African National Congress (ANC); a national liberation movement for African Americans to gain political, economic, and social equality.

Mandela's efforts toward ending discrimination placed him in jail for 27 years, where he still continued to have an impact on the battle against apartheid. There was constant uproar and support to release him from jail. When he was finally offered freedom, he declined, vowing only to accept his freedom if the government dismembered Apartheid. As Frederik Willem De Klerk became president, he released Mandela in 1990, where they spent the next 3 years ending the apartheid.

By 1993, Apartheid was dismantled and Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize and a year later in 1994, Mandela became Africa’s first black president.

July 18th is Nelson Mandela Day. It is a day to reflect on history; the battles, the struggles, and triumphs accomplished by the movements Mandela was a prominent figure in.
